Configuring the Apple Internet Dialer

When you open the Apple Internet Dialer application, it should show you a screen similar to this:

To set up for using WEBBWORKS, first click OK to get past the Welcome screen. Then select Define Provider Information from the Provider menu. You should get a screen similar to this:

After you complete each step of the configuration, you press the Next button to advance to the next screen; you can also always go back to review or change information during this process by using the Back button. Click on the Next button now to advance to the next screen:

This screen has already been configured for the Tri-Cities dial-up, so you follow this example as a guide: Provider Name is simply the our name (WEBBWORKS), Provider Phone Number is our dial-up number (585-3648), and the Username, Password and Email Password fields should all be filled in according to the account information you chose when you signed up for WEBBWORKS. The password fields will show only bullets as you type (for your privacy), so be careful to type each in exactly as you requested. This means be sure to type in capital or lowercase letters as appropriate, or else the system won't recognize it; a password like "myPass" cannot be entered as "mypass". Your Email Password is the same as your regular login Password, although you may have to enter this again if you use a mail client that doesn't come with the Apple Internet Connection Kit. Once you're done, click on the Next button again to advance to the next screen:

Server Information is the more technical part of the configuration process; basically, just fill in all the information as displayed above. You should probably keep a copy of this information written down somewhere near your computer (a print-out of this page will do fine) in case you need to reset any of these settings or add them in other Internet clients that are not supported by the Apple Internet Connection Kit. Once you've finished entering all these server addresses, click on the Next button one more time to advance to the last screen:

You probably don't need to change any of the fields on this screen; a Connection Script is only necessary when the login process is more involved than just checking your username and password. For Webbworks, it's not, so a Connection Script is rarely necessary.

Well, that's about it; click OK in the corner, and you should be back at the main Dialer screen. You may also need to configure the Dialer to recognize your modem; the instructions provided with the Connection Kit should help you with this, as well as walking you through connecting once configuration is complete.

note: While you can use the Apple Internet Dialer application to open and close your PPP dial-in sessions (in fact, you may want to leave its icon out on the desktop or make an alias of it for your Apple Menu if you anticipate needing to access it frequently), one of the niftier aspects of PPP is that it's effectively a transparent translator for TCP/IP. That is, if you haven't already dialed into your account, then whenever you launch an application that looks for an Internet connection (e.g. a Web browser), the Apple Internet Dialer will automatically intercede and attempt to establish a connection for that software to use. This means that you may only need to use the Internet Dialer to close your connection, while you use your mail client or another program to start it (automagically) whenever it's needed.

Once you're connected, you might want to get some of those Internet programs running; to get you started, check out our Mac client instructions for some guidance.
